Access

This site should work for everyone.

Hire Warriors is built to be usable by people with disabilities, including anyone browsing with a keyboard, a screen reader or a magnifier. Here is where we stand, what still needs work, and how to tell us when something gets in your way.

Our commitment

A directory that only some veterans can use is not much of a directory. We treat accessibility as part of building the site rather than a cleanup task at the end. Our target is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA, and we hold new work to that standard before it goes live.

What we have done

Pages use real headings in a sensible order, so a screen reader can move through a page by structure instead of guessing. Navigation, search, links and buttons can all be reached and operated with the keyboard alone, and the focus indicator stays visible as you move. Images that carry meaning have text alternatives, and decorative images are marked so assistive technology skips them. Text and interface colours are checked against the WCAG 2.1 Level AA contrast ratios. The layout reflows down to phone width with no horizontal scrolling and holds up when you zoom in. Motion on the site is kept modest, and it switches off automatically for anyone whose system asks for reduced motion.

What is not there yet

Two parts of the directory come from third-party tools we do not fully control. Search and filtering run on Jetboost, and the location field uses the Mapbox geocoder. Their keyboard behaviour and screen reader announcements are not everything we would like, and we cannot rewrite their internals. We report problems upstream, we work around what we can from the outside, and we will say so plainly here rather than pretend the whole site is clean.

Map results and the plain text alternative

Results plotted on a map are hard to use without sight, and a map is a poor way to hand a list to a screen reader. So every business in the directory is also reachable as an ordinary text page, with its name, category, description and contact details in plain HTML, and the category and location pages are standard linked lists. If the map does not work for you, nothing in the directory is out of reach: the same businesses are all there in text.

This is ongoing work

The site keeps changing, so this statement is not a certificate we earned once. We review it whenever we add a feature, change a template or swap out a third-party component, and we re-test the pages that changed. The date at the top of this page tells you when it was last reviewed.

Telling us about a barrier

If something on this site blocks you, email paul@honorable.marketing with "Accessibility" in the subject line. It helps to include the address of the page, what you were trying to do, what happened instead, and the browser, operating system and assistive technology you were using, with version numbers if you have them. We reply within five business days. If the fix is quick, we make it and tell you. If it is not, we tell you what we are doing about it and roughly when to expect it.

If you cannot use the site at all

You do not have to use the website to use the directory. Email paul@honorable.marketing, tell us what you are looking for and how you would like to be reached, and we will look up any listing and give you the business name, category, description, phone number, address and website, read out over the phone or sent in whatever format works for you. The same goes for owners: if the listing form is not usable for you, contact us and we will take your information directly and enter it ourselves.
